I/The World investigates the practice of portraiture within Indonesian art from the modern to the contemporary period, featuring works from the collection of Tumurun Museum alongside selected newly commissioned pieces. In this exhibition, portraiture is not merely a record of appearance but a space for exploring inner life and engaging with broader social realities.
Spread across two main spaces, the first presents portraiture as a tool for introspection, where artists delve into themes of identity, trauma, memory, and emotional the quest for personal meaning. The second brings together works that use portraiture to address broader societal concerns from inequality and erased histories to shifting cultural values and shared realities. Together, these works position portraiture as a dynamic meeting point between the personal and the collective, art and reality, opening a space for reflection on who we are both as individuals and as part of a larger, changing world.
